Shirley A. Duwe,
age 61, of Marion passed away on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at ThedaCare
Regional Medical Center, Neenah, as a result of injuries
sustained in an automobile accident on September 28th.
The former Shirley Ann Gruenstern was born on October 23,
1955 at the Clintonville Hospital to Gordon and Mary Jane
(Grenz) Gruenstern. She grew up on the family farm in the
Town of Dupont, Waupaca County. Shirley graduated from
Marion High School in 1974. She was united in marriage on
July 24, 1976 to Brian N. Duwe at St. John Lutheran Church,
Marion. Shirley began at Aid Association for Lutherans in
the mail / supply room and worked her way up to be a Senior
Buyer in the Purchasing Department. She was employed by
Thrivent Financial in Appleton for over 41 years. The couple
lived in Neenah from 1976 until returning to the Marion area
in 1999. Shirley and Brian settled in their dream home which
they built on family land in 2001.
Shirley was a longtime active member of St. John Lutheran
Church, Marion, where she volunteered as a Sunday School
Teacher, former Church Council member, and served on the
Stewardship and Cemetery Committees. Her interests included
flower gardening, going to craft fairs, and shopping for her
nieces and nephews. She loved weekend adventures with her
husband and traveling with her high school “SeaGal” friends.
Shirley also liked sitting around the campfire at her home
and she always enjoyed life to the fullest. Shirley’s huge
laugh and wonderful sense of humor was contagious to
everyone around her. She will be remembered most as a loving
wife, a caring sister, and a proud aunt.
Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Brian; and three
sisters, Mary Hoppe of Marion, Cheryl Richter of West Palm
Beach, FL, and Colleen (Dennis) Piller of Appleton. There
are two nieces and one nephew, Tracy (Chris) Hoffmann, Tammy
(Darrell) Kerneen, and Greg (Alyssa) Richter. There are
seven great nieces and nephews: Patron, Parker, and Piper
Hoffmann; Joslyn Hoppe and Savanah Kerneen; Carter and Cole
Richter. She is further survived by many other relatives and
friends. Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, a
brother-in-law Roy Hoppe, and her father and mother-in-law
Robert and Marcella Duwe.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 21st
at 11:00 AM at St. John Lutheran Church, Marion, with Rev.
Beth Macha officiating. Friends may call on Saturday from
9:00 AM until time of service at the church. The Beil-Didier
Funeral Home, Marion, is assisting the family. In lieu of
flowers, memorials are preferred to “St. John Lutheran –
Sunday School Program” in Shirley’s memory.
