Daniel Marquardt Obituary

Daniel Paul Marquardt, age 61, Town of Morris, Shawano County, died unexpectedly on Sunday, January 31, 2010.

He was born July 22, 1948, the son of the late Edgar and Alice (Grenz) Marquardt, in Shawano.

On October 3, 1970 Daniel was united in marriage to Phyllis Ann Pehlke at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Bowler. She preceded him in death on September 19, 2004.

He graduated from Bowler High School in 1966 and worked at FWD Corp, Clintonville until he was drafted into the United States Army on May 18, 1968. He served as a straight leg small arms infantryman with B Company 2/12 INF. 25th INF. DIV., in Vietnam from October 1968-December 1969, attaining the position of squad leader and the rank of SGT. He suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of his combat experiences and always tried to help other veterans with these same experiences to get help from the VA. He helped set up reunions for B Company, where many friendships that were formed in combat were renewed and strengthened over the years.

After their marriage, the couple dairy farmed in the town of Morris, Shawano County, until May 30, 2002 and raised four wonderful children, who were a big help on the farm from an early age, and learned to work hard and do everything to the best of their ability. They all went on to school and made their parents very proud. Dan then did field work for Strassburg Creek Dairy. Dan and Phyllis were active in Shawano County Farm Bureau for many years. They were also active in Morning Glory Farms Cooperative, receiving the Rupple Award in 1976. They were Shawano County Outstanding Young Farmers in 1981. Dan served on the boards of directors of Shawano County Farm Bureau, Shawano County FS and Northeast Wisconsin Farm Credit for many years.
In his younger years he played baseball for Bowler and Wittenberg of the BABA. He was an avid hunter with many deer to his credit with the rifle, muzzleloader and bow. He also enjoyed turkey hunting and taught all his children and grandchildren gun safety and the pleasures of hunting and the outdoors. The Marquardt family hosts a deer hunt for disabled persons each fall since 1992. Many hunters had their last deer hunt because of this program. Dan was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Bowler, the Woodland chapter of Wisconsin Whitetails, and the Bowler FFA Alumni. He was a life member of American Legion Post #414, Bowler, a life member of the National Rifle Association, the 40&8 Voiture Locale #989, Shawano, the VFW Post #7933, Birnamwood, VVA Chapter #206, Shawano, Disabled American Veterans, the 25th Infantry Division Association, Amvets, The Combat Infantryman's Association, Wisconsin Woodland Owner's Associations and Whtitetails Unlimited.
