Jennie
E (Shupp) Grenz Back
Jennie E. Grenz, 93, of Effort, passed
away Thursday, Nov. 1, at Brookmont Health Care
Center in Effort.
Jennie was born in Dotter’s Corner, on June 29,
1919, the daughter of the late Robert and
Gertrude (Young) Shupp.
She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church
and the Ladies Auxiliary in Effort. She was also
an honorary member of the Pennsylvania Sheriff’s
Association, and a member of the Polk Township
Volunteer Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary in
Kresgeville. Many will remember Jennie’s love of
collecting treasures from flea markets and
auctions. She loved spending her time selling
her treasures at her stand at the Wind Gap Flea
Market and at Herfurth Brother’s complex in
Gilbert.
Jennie had worked as a Warp Tender at the former
Collin and Ackerman Textile Co. in Pen Argyl,
retiring in 1982. She worked as a nurse’s aide
at Brookmont Health Care in Effort and for
Herfurth’s Meat Market in retail sales for eight
years.
We have been blessed with the presence of Jennie
in our lives, and she will be deeply missed by
her sons, Steward “Butch” Herfurth Sr. and his
wife, Kathy, of Gilbert, Louis C. Herfurth Jr.
and his wife, Carol, of Gilbert;
daughter-in-law, Nancy Stafford of Saylorsburg;
stepdaughter, Thomasina Grenz Odam of North
Carolina; sister-in-law, Emma Shupp of
Kresgeville. She was a loving and gentle grammy
to her nine grandchildren, 21
great-grandchildren and several
great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived
by nieces and nephews.
Jennie was preceded in death by her husbands,
Gustav Grenz, Alonzo Odam and Louis Herfurth
Sr.; her son, Thomas Odam; her daughter,
Gertrude Overfield; son-in-law, Robert Overfield;
her grandson, Eric R. Herfurth; her sisters,
Florence Zacharias, Miriam Dotter and Emma
Davis; and her brothers, Steward and Frederick
Shupp.
Family and friends are welcome to offer their
condolences from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5 at
the Donald N. Gower Funeral Home Inc., Route
209, Gilbert, with funeral services beginning at
8 p.m. with the Rev. Manuel Stivers officiating.
Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday,
Nov. 6 at the Dotter’s Corner Cemetery in
Kunkletown.
