Kenneth L. Seyer was born on November 4, 1935 to Walter and
Mildred (Rishel) Seyer in Mobridge, SD. He grew up on a farm
and attended school in Selby, graduating in 1953. After
school, he joined the Air Force where he was stationed at
the Lincoln, Nebraska Air Force Base and was a Bombsite
Radar Technician during the Cold War. He was honorably
discharged in 1957 and was very proud of his military
service. After his discharge he briefly took classes at
Northern State College before taking over the family farm in
1959.
On June 21, 1959, Kenneth married SydneyAnn Zeller after
meeting her at Lake Hiddenwood while water skiing. Together,
they had two children, John and Janeen.
Kenneth retired from farming in 1980, and moved to Aberdeen,
SD. He worked at 3M for a short time before working for the
Public-School System as a custodian from 1982 to 1997.
SydneyAnn died December 28, 1997.
Kenneth was an avid hunter and fisherman. He taught the
Youth Hunter’s Safety Course in Selby for many years. He was
a member of the Selby Jaycees. Ken was an accomplished
cornet player and proudly played the taps at many Memorial
Day services. In 1976, Ken was part of the Selby Men’s
Chorus. During the bicentennial you could hear Ken’s voice
throughout the room as he bellowed his solo “When Johnny
Comes Marching Home”. After moving to Aberdeen Ken became
interested in growing roses and photography. He loved taking
pictures of nature and his family. Ken was also a history
buff with a particular interest in military and American
history. He enjoyed meeting new people and was proud of his
family.
