October 19, 2017 at the Wishek Living Center, Wishek, ND.
Esther Viola Schock was born on May 1, 1922 to John and
Christina (Mertz) Schock near Ashley, North Dakota. Esther
attended country school. To help her family during the Great
Depression, Esther went to work as a hired maid at the age
of 10. She continued working in this capacity until she met
and married Oscar Schlauch on August 19, 1940. Their
marriage was blessed with two daughters, Arlene and Ardella.
Esther and Oscar farmed for nine years before moving to Kulm
in 1949. Esther worked as a cleaning lady and was an expert
in cleaning, painting, and wood-staining.
Esther accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior
in 1952 and was an active member of the First Congregational
Church.
Esther had the gift of hospitality. She was a wonderful
cook. The door to her home was always open to friends who
would drop by for coffee, and family members enjoyed
gathering in her home for holidays and other special
occasions. She had an intense love for her family and made
many sacrifices for their needs and happiness.
She entered the Wishek Living Center in March of 2006. Her
positive attitude and sense of humor were a delight for
residents and staff, alike. She thoroughly enjoyed music and
attended all the sing-a-longs and enjoyed the music of the
various bands who perform at the home in Wishek. She was
passionate about the color pink and while at the home in
Wishek, she all but refused to wear anything unless it was
pink.
After a lingering battle with Alzheimer’s disease, Esther
passed away on October 19, 2017. She was 95 years, 5 months
and 19 days old.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children: Arlene
Eslinger and her husband, Jim, and Ardella Schwartzwalter;

Schwartzwalter and Kristin Weinberger; Her great
grandchildren: Luke and Emmie Farrar, and Jessie (Farrar)
Lux, Mackenzie and Jack Weinberger, and Coralie and Camron
Schwartzwalter; Five sisters: Ida Weidemen, Ruth Buerkley,
