Mathilda Wilhelmina Kallis was born March
10, 1912, on a farm near Beulah to Jacob and Wilhelmina (KLoss)
Grenz.
Mathilda, at the age of eight months, was raised by her
uncle and aunt, Gottfried and Anna Grenz of Hebron, because
of her mothers death. She attended rural and city schools
while at Hebron.
Mathilda received her nurses training at St. Alexius
Hospital in Bismarck. She worked several years at Mountain
View Military Academy for young boys in Altadena, CA. She
also worked at a rest center in Glendale, CA until she came
to Elgin in 1949 to work for Lorenzen Memorial Hospital. She
worked there as a LPN. She taught Sunday school at Hebron
and New Leipizig Baptist churches.
Mathilda married Albert Kallis June 19, 1951. at the First
Patist Church of Habron. The couple moved shortly to their
present farm northwest of New Leipzig where she helped with
the farm and resided until Dec. 2nd thru Dec. 23rd when she
was a patient at the Hettinger Hospital. Mathilda passed
away while a resident at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Hettinger
on Dec. 26, 1988. Mathilda was 76 years, 9 months and 16
days old.
Preceding her in death were her parents, one brother, one
sister and one half-sister.
Survivors include her husband, Albert; a son, David; two
granddaughters, Jennifer and Suanne, all of New Leipzig; one
brother, Carl Grenz of Billings, MT; one half-brother,
Norman Grenz of Cleveland, TN; and one foster sister, Lydia
Heinle of Hebron, ND.
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 30, 1988, at 1:00
p.m. from New Leipzig Baptist Church with Rev. Harvey A.
Motis officiating.
Pallbearers were Leonard Kallis, Adrian Kallis, Richard Gwin,
Robert Bohnet, Kurt Blickensderfer, and Elden Grosz.
Interment was made in Ebenezer Baptist Cemetery, northwest
of New Leipzig, ND
