GRENZ FAMILY TREE

Dear Alvina Schurr:

The pictures you submitted for a "Clues Identification" were put to one side and forgotten until a son needled me to write down all I can remember!

Did you have any luck with responses?

The one picture of the 4 children and their parents really intrigued me!  The girl standing in the center between the parents looked like a young Caroline Grenz Schrag.  She was born in Lichtenfeld,  Russia, Jan 31, 1872 to Adam and Louise Lutz Grenz.  Her mother died when she was 12 and when she was 15 (in 1887) she and her father and family came to America and settled near Freeman, South Dakota. They stayed there a short while and then moved to Jefferson, Oregon.

There was a second marriage because Caroline spoke of a half sister. When she was around 18 years of age - she married Andrew J.Schrag and in 1900 they homesteaded in Washington in the Odessa area. In 1923 they moved to Park Place right outside of Monroe, Wash., and stayed there until they passed away, Andrew in 1938 and Caroline in 1950.  They had 3 sons, 5 daughters and several stillbirths, they also raised a foster girl who was a distant relative.

I'm enclosing a picture of my Grandfather, John Grenz, and his brothers and sisters. His parents were Christine Lutz Grenz and Samuel Grenz.  Now here's the connection - Christine and Louise Lutz were sisters and Samuel and Adam Grenz were brothers so Caroline and John were double cousins, living in the same dorf or village.  John emigrated to American about 1885 and I don't know where he went.  He married Augusta Kaiser and they lived in a farmhouse in Harvey, N. Dakota (McLean Co.).  There were 3 children born to them, Anna Samuel and Lillian and in 1903 she passed away,

I'm not sure when John met and married Clara Beck Coates - who was alone with her two children, Lydia and Theodore, but they married and lived in Portland, Ore., and had 2 children of their own, Ruth and Edna. Anna, the oldest, married Adam Beck Feb 5, 1917 and they had one daughter, Ledy Kathryn, born Oct. 11, 1918.  Adam died Mar. 20, 1920. Anna never remarried and couldn't take care of Kathryn, so she was put up for adoption - but decided to have her live with Caroline and Andrew Schrag in 1921 and she stayed with them until she married in 1938.

I'm that Kathryn

Hope this sheds some light on a part of the Grenz family. I do know that Grandfather John had two brothers in the Portland, Oregon, area but I do not know anything more.  My mother had an unhappy relationship with all her family members, so I was not given any opportunity to know very much of my family ancestors until the 1940's when I finally located my Grandfather. I was happily married for 44 years when my husband, George Valentine, Jr., passed away.  We had 10 children--8 sons and 2 daughters who are still living.  I remarried and have had a good live from day 1
