John Wilber, 79, of Lebanon died Monday at the Samaritan Evergreen Hospice House.
John was born at Albany Osteopathic Hospital to Albert and Martha (Haglund) Wilber. John grew up in the Albany area and attended Oak Grove School for his first eight years. He graduated from Albany High School in 1952. He then joined the Coast Guard and achieved the rating of aviation machinist’s mate second class and served on Coast Guard rescue helicopters stationed in Port Angeles, Wash. In 1960 he graduated from Oregon State College with a bachelor’s degree in business. He married Jean Annette Smith on Dec. 27, 1958, at St. Mary’s Church in Albany and they had three children.
While living in Newport, John was a salesman for cars and insurance. He retired to Lebanon in 1996. He was active in many civic organizations over the years and was currently a member of the American Legion Post 10.
John enjoyed many road trips, morning coffee with friends, camping, family gatherings and visiting casinos. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren, and followed their careers and accomplishments closely.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
John is survived by his wife, Jean; children Brad Wilber of Vancouver, Wash., Jeffrey Wilber of Lebanon, and Jannette Thomas of Batesville, Ark.; grandchildren Leah, Max and Cassidy Wilber, and Rachael, Ian, Hannah and Sean Thomas; great-grandchildren Maureece and Chance Wilber; and siblings Jim Wilber and wife Becky of Friendswood, Texas, Dorris Swartzendruber and husband Don of Albany, and Dorothy Senchina of Eugene.
The family invites you to a memorial service for John at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 13, the American Legion Post 10, 1215 Pacific Blvd., in Albany.

Sunday, April 13, would have been John’s 80th birthday. We will miss him.
