Eugene G. and Evelyn Grenz

Eugene G. Grenz was born March 27, 1915 near Artas, SD the son of Gottlieb G. and Christine (Wentz) Grenz.  He graduated from Napoleon High School and attended Merchandising and Business School in St. Louis, MO and Bismarck Business College.  Upon completing his education, Eugene managed the Wentz & Grenz Store in Ashley, which was sold to E. W. Schock.  he then went to Lehr in 1935 to manage the Wentz & Grenz store there.

Eugene and Evelyn Dorothy Timm were married on August 7, 1938 at the Evangelical Church in Napoleon.  Evelyn was born August 11, 1917 in rural Braddock, ND the daughter of Herman and Anna (Kaz) Timm.  she graduated from Napoleon High School in 1936 and served as Deputy Logan County Treasurer until moving to Lehr in 1938.

The Grenzes started their business career at Lehr, managing the Wentz & Grenz Store.  After several years they purchased and became sole owners of the business known as the Grenz General Store which they operated 42 years.  Throughout their entire lives, both Eugene and Evelyn have been active in civic, city and club work.  Eugene served on the ration board during World War II, and was mayor and alderman on the city board for 32 years.

While in business, the Grenzes promoted truck loads of fresh frozen fish, direct from Canada; direct loads of fruit from Washington and Montana; flour, bulk cookies and gourmet items.

The Grenzes have two children:  Mrs. Alvin (Sharon Ann) Roesler who teaches in the Napoleon School system.  Alvin is engaged in farming and mechanic work.  They have three children:  Randy, Heidi and Barrie, and live in Lehr, ND; and Rodney Gene, a registered representative with Piper, Jaffrey and Hopwood at St. Paul, MN.  His wife, Kay, is employed as an executive resources manager with the 3-M Company.  They have a daughter, Jennifer

Eugene and Evelyn are members of the United Methodist Church in Lehr.   They are semi-retired and spending time golfing and winter vacations in Phoenix and southern California.

Eugene Grenz - Obituary

The funeral for Eugene G. Grenz, 79, Lehr, N.D., will be at 11 Friday in United Methodist Church, Lehr. Visitation will be from 9 to 9 today and Thursday in Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek, N.D., and one hour before services in the church. He died Monday, Dec. 5, 1994.

Mr. Grenz was born March 27, 1915, near Artas, S.D. In 1925 he moved with his family to Napoleon, N.D., where he graduated from high school. He attended Merchandising and Business School in St. Louis. He also attended Bismarck (N.D.) Business College. He moved to Ashley, N.D., where he managed the local Wentz and Grenz store. He married Evelyn D. Timm Aug. 7, 1938, in Napoleon. They lived in Lehr, where they owned and operated Grenz General Store for 46 years. He served as District 30 Republican chairman and was also chief bill room clerk of the North Dakota Legislature for several sessions. He served on the Lehr City Council for 26 years.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Rodney G. (Kay), Woodbury, Minn.; a daughter, Sharon A. (Alvin) Roelser, Lehr; three brothers, Albert G. (Marie), St. Paul, John G. "Custar" (Irene), Napoleon, Willie G. (Lorene), McClusky, N.D.; three sisters Ida (Harley) Kiesz, Lodi, Calif., Christine (Dalbert) Hoen, Tacoma, Wash., Elsie (Erv) Meyer, Mesa, Ariz.; and four grandchildren.

Mr. & Mrs. Eugene G. Grenz came to Lehr in 1938.  He began his business career in Ashley in 1936 when he was employed as store manager of the Wentz and Grenz store.  Eugene moved to napoleon in Oct. 1925 with his parents.  Throughout their entire life, both Mr. & Mrs. Grenz have been active in civic affairs and club work.  Mr. Grenz served on the Ration Board during World War II and spent a full and active life in the community as a city board member, a fireman, a Wildlife member, Saddle Club member, member of Lehr Businessmen's Association, member of Lehr Assoc of commerce, director of Central Dakota Bank, Lehr, member of Bismarck Elks Club, Odd Fellows Club, Wishek Golf Club, town and general chairman of Lehr Diamond Jubilee.  Mr. & Mrs. Grenz are members of the United Methodist Church at Lehr.                                                                                                     Lehr Diamond Jubilee 1898-1973 (McIntosh Co)

 

Evelyn Dorothy Grenz Timms - Obituary

The funeral for Evelyn Grenz, Lehr, ND will be Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the Dakota Room at the Wishek Home for the Aged, Wishek, ND. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the Dakota Room. Burial will be at the Lehr City Cemetery, Lehr, ND.

Evelyn Dorothy Timm, daughter of Herman and Anna Timm was born August 11, 1917 in Steele, N.D. She graduated from Napoleon High School. Evelyn married Eugene G. Grenz on August 7, 1938. For 46 years she was in business with Eugene at the Grenz General Store in Lehr. Evelyn was a member of Lehr United Methodist Church and was active in Thimble Bee and Homemakers. Evelyn and Eugene spent part of their retirement in Mesa, Az.

Evelyn died peacefully on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at the Wishek Home for the Aged, Wishek, ND where she had been a resident for several years. She was 94 years old.

Evelyn is survived by son, Rodney (Kay) Grenz, Naples, FL; sister, Phyllis Wentz, Mandan, ND; son-in-law Alvin Roesler, Lehr, ND; 4 grandchildren and 1 great grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband Eugene, daughter Sharon Roesler (Grenz) and 3 sisters.
