Grandma Moved in With Us
Written by Tom House, 10/11/2020
When I was probably 5 or 6 Grandma moved in with us in El
Monte, California.
For us it was a great day to have Grandma closer by.
Grandma would help as much as she could though she was
pretty frail. She would generally sprinkle the laundry that
needed ironing, using a bottle that had a cork stopper and
tin sprinkler nozzle, then roll them up and put them in a
basket for mom.
Grandma would also make us kid food. For example, she would
sprinkle white sugar on Wonder bed and serve it to us kids.
Boy was that a hit, though I'm not sure Mom or Dad knew or
would have approved.
Every now and again, Grandma would also make pancakes for
breakfast, and would always put small blobs of batter
attached so they looked like ears.
So she could have a bit of privacy and probably a bit of
peace and quiet fro
m all of us kids, she moved into a trailer in the back yard.
Mom and Dad also used the trailer to hide our Christmas
gifts.
That didn't last long, because shortly thereafter, perhaps
while trying to use the propane stove, the trailer caught on
fire.
Grandma escaped the fire with little injury, even though she
wasn't very agile and all the Christmas gifts were lost,
except for a tin tea set that was given to Dawn.
Dawn recalls that when she was in Kindergarten or so, a
schoolmate boy stopped by with some freshly picked 💐
flowers to give to Dawn.
Dawn says that Grandma answered the door and upon seeing the
small boy and flowers, thought that was "foolishness" and
sent the boy away.
I don't recall what happened after that, but when we move to
Azusa, Grandma moved with us and had her own bedroom.
We sure loved Grandma and having her always with us.
