Edwin Zimmerman

          Edwin was the oldest son born to Jacob and Karoline (Grenz) Zimmerman on the farm north of Artas on December 17, 1904.  His father passed away when he was 14 years old.  So along with his mother and brothers and sisters they worked and  n later years bought the farm from his mother.  The farm is now owned and operated by Edwin's grandson.  Edwin and Ella Lydia (Kauta) Zimmerman were married in Mound City, SD on Oct 23, 1927.  To this union eight children.

           Edwin and Lydia, as she is known, moved to Artas in 1969 where they retired.  Edwin was on the school board in the Odessa district and county commissioner for 18 years.  They were members of the Baptist Church.  Lydia passed away Nov 12, 1982, and Edwin passed away on Nov 14, 1990.                                                                                                                                    100 Years on the Prairie, A history of Artas, SD 1901-2001 page 105

Mrs. Edwin (Lydia) Zimmerman, 72, Artas, died Tuesday Nov 16th at the Eureka Hospital. The funeral was held Friday Nov 19th at the Baptist Church in Herreid with the Rev. Harry Johnson of Herein officiating. Burial was in the Artas Cemetery.
Casketbearers, all grandsons, were Perry Wiest, Jeffrey Wiest, Curtis Hoff, Kenneth Beck, Vaughn Beck and Scott Zimmerman. Mrs. Meta Ackerman was organist and the church choir sang.

Lydia Kautz was born Sept 20, 1910 at Artas. She grew up there and married Edwin Zimmerman Oct 20, 1927 at Mound City. The farmed north of Artas until 1972 when they moved into Artas.

Survivors include her husband; four sones, Lavern, Rolla, ND: Leroy, Aberdeen; Steven, Oceanside, CA; and Keith, Eureka; four daughters, Mrs Milbert (Frances) Joachim, Spokane, WA; Mrs Floyd (Gladys) Beck, Artas; Mrs Alvin (Rose Marie) Wiest, Venturia, ND and Mrs Harry (Lorraine) Hoff, Eureka; four sisters, Miss Esther Kautz, Mrs Emil (Ernestine) Ackerman and Mrs. Albert (Rosie) Berreth, all of Eureka; and Mrs Art (Julia) Fischer, Aberdeen: two brothers, Calvin Kautz, Edgermont; and Ernest Kautz, Aberdeen; 24 grand children and four great-grand children. She was preceded in death by three brothers.
