Funeral services for Delbert Louis Kauk, 89-year-old resident of the United Methodist Health Care Center in Clinton, were held Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Leedey.

Kauk died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014. He was the 11th of 12 children born to Christian and Magdalena Trost Kauk, and was born April 11, 1924 on the family farm in Custer County.

Kauk attended the Solid Rock Country School near Butler, graduating from the eighth grade.

He earned several ciphering and athletic awards and had seven “perfect attendance” years.
Upon graduation, he was honored with the American Legion Award for all around good citizenship.
On Sept. 16, 1944, Kauk married Oleta Nadine Haney. The family made their home on the farm southeast of Leedey. His first wife preceded him in death on May 20, 1968.

On Dec. 13, 1969, he married Fern Higgins in Elk City. In the early 1980s, Delbert and Fern moved to Leedey.
Kauk was a farmer who also helped build many local government
ponds.
Kauk was baptized as a baby on Sept. 28, 1924.
Also preceding him in death were his parents, Chris and Lena Kauk; a granddaughter, Amy Switzer Jones; brothers, Albert, Walter, Herbert, Emil, Barney Lee and L.D. Kauk; three sisters, Vera Riedl, Doris Rhoades and Ruth Robertson; two nephews, Larry and Paul Kauk; and Fern’s son, Jackie Higgins.

Survivors include his wife, Fern Kauk of Clinton; children, Deanna Harris and her husband, Don, of Weatherford, Rhonda Kauk of Lubbock, Texas, Janet Switzer and her husband, Gary, of Leedey, Gary Higgins and his wife, Debbie, of Elk City, and Connie Gass of Hammon; a sister, Bernice Carter of Leedey; 12 grandchildren, Dena Bass, Dana Bradford, Darrell Switzer, Amber Mayes, Heath Higgins, Darin Higgins, Kimbre Danielson, Ricky Higgins, Bobby Higgins, Kelly Leverett, John Paul Gass and Debbie Spikes; 19 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Interment followed the services in the New Hermon Cemetery, at Leedey. Arrangements were under the direction of the Shaw Funeral Home, of Leedey.
