Clifton George Schnaible, son of Elizabeth (Zeller) and Henry Schnaible, was born May 18, 1923 at Java. He was raised on a farm two miles north of Java. His formal education consisted of rural school and Java Public School. He graduated with the JHS Class of 1941. Cliff then started his life’s work of farming. He married Verna E. Pfaff at Java on January 9, 1944. The first two years of marriage they lived with Cliff’s parents. In 1946, they moved to a farm that they purchased one mile north of Java. They retired from their dairy operation in 1987. Verna died March 2, 1999. Cliff continued living on the farm until 2005, when he moved into Java. Since September 2008, Cliff lived at the Selby Good Samaritan Society. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Java Community Club. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and sports in general; especially baseball which he played and coached. Cliff’s love of farming was summed up in his quote in a news story—“I love running a tractor. I love to go out there and just drive.”

Clifton is survived by two sons—Dale Schnaible of Rapid City, SD and Paul (Julie) Schnaible of Sioux Falls, SD; one daughter Connie Ann Schnaible of Sioux Falls; two grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
