Christoph Grenz
Travelled to America with wife, four children, Katherina's
brother Phillip Mayer and the Karl Hauck family.
They settled on homestead land the SE 1/4 Sec. 2 Twp. 126 Range
75 in Campbell County between Mound City and Eureka, South Dakota
In the fall of 1897 tragedy struck. Seven of their
children succumbed due to the diphtheria epidemic, all within one
month. Only the two youngest children, John and Christav,
who was born in the US survived. The graves of the children
are located on the homestead quarter about a mile south of highway
no. 10. The area is surrounded by a fence. In 1986
there was one lone, somewhat unsteady, wooden pole marking the
spot. It bore the inscription, Grenz along with the names of
the children and dates of birth and death. Christof sold his
land April 15, 1898. They moved to North Dakota and lived
for a time in the Venturia area before moving to the
Gackle-Streeter-area. Later moved to Medina, Jamestown,
Washington State and then retired in Medina. 1938 went to
Calif. with son Emil and died there.
