Bette L. Ammon Coulter,
85, died peacefully Jan. 29 in Albany surrounded by family.
Bette was born in Red Oak, Iowa, the youngest of six
children of Alexander C. Weidman and Cora Jane Copeland.
Her grandfather was a senator, and her family had a good
life until the Great Depression, the financial stress of
which eventually caused her father's death in 1935.
By 1936 Bette, her brother Duane and their mother relocated
to Oregon to live with Bette's older sisters. Her mother
died in 1939, and Bette, now orphaned, continued to live
with her sisters. She attended high school in Sweet Home and
graduated from Jefferson High School.
In 1941 Bette married Lee Ammon of Jefferson. They lived in
St. Helens, Salem and Jefferson, raising three children.
Later divorced, Bette married Jack Coulter of Sweet Home in
1964. They lived in Junction City, Hillsboro and Eugene. In
1983 they moved to their home in Albany, where Jack died in
1990, and where Bette lived until her passing. Bette's
siblings all preceded her in death.
Bette attended Catholic church and worked as a bank teller.
Her family was most important to her, but she also enjoyed
creating things, gardening, reading and word puzzles. She
hosted for many years a weekly coffee group at her home, and
liked to play cards and bunko.
Bette is survived by her son, Randy Ammon, of Albany;
daughter Becky Gardner of Jefferson; stepdaughters Dalee
Dickinson of Seattle, Darla Wilson of Eugene and Tricia
