Bertha (Pfeifer) Bauer
Bertha Bauer seemed shadowed by misfortune from the time
she was a young woman. She had numerous surgical
operations, was badly burned one time, broke her hip,
suffered heart attacks and was ill for most of her life.
But she seldom complained, her daughter Darlene remembers.
She was witty and loving, always ready to help others, to
share and to show concern for others.
Bertha, who had been a resident of the Mobridge Care
Center for the past 10 years, died Saturday, August 17, at
the center at the age of 86. Native of Zeeland.
She was born to John R. and Elizabeth (Reimer) Pfeiffer on
June 19, 1899, on a farm near Zeeland, North Dakota, the
fourth of 12 children in the family.
The children all did their share of work on the farm and
Bertha early learned to help bake the dozens of loaves of
bread and pies that it took to feed the large family. She
became a good cook and liked it, enjoyed the plentiful
cream, butter and eggs supplied by the farm.
Christ H. Bauer grew up in a large family on a neighboring
farm and he and Bertah were frequently together at
gatherings. On March 2, 1922, they were married in Zeeland
and they made their home on a farm near the town. It was
their home for 42 years before they moved into the town of
Zeeland.
Christ died in 1970 and in September of that year Bertha
moved to an apartment in Mobridge to be near her daughter
Darlene. In March 1975 she became a resident of the
Mobridge Care Center.
Bertha had always liked music and her favorite selections
were hymns. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church
of Zeeland and later of the Zion Lutheran in Mobridge. In
her late years she was able to devote more time to
crocheting and embroidering, two handiwork pastimes she
enjoyed.
She liked children and she and her husband had seven.
Those surviving her are two sons, Arnold Bauer of Warner,
South Dakota, and James Bauer of Hazen, North Dakota; and
daughter, Mrs. LaVern (Darlene) Quaschnick, of Mobridge.
Also surviving are nine grandchildren, four
great-grandchildren; two brothers, John H. Pfeiffer of
Zeeland and Henry Pfeiffer of Eureka; and four sisters,
Pauline Bauer of the Hosner Nursing Home, Emma Huber of
Yakima, Washington, Christina Bauer of Zeeland and Leona
Kosel of Mound City.
Preceding her in death were three sons, Hugo, Gilbert and
Thomas; a daughter, Erna; her husband, and her parents.
Funeral services were Tuesday morning at Zion Lutheran
Church in Mobridge with the Rev. Peter J. Naumann
officiating. Marion Schlomer was the organist and the
children's choir of the church sang "Jesus, the World's
Best Friend."
Casketbearers were a grandson Paul Bauer of Warner and
nephews Ted Bauer of Eureka, Walter Bauer of Seattle,
Washington, Hank Bauer and Miles Pfeiffer, both of
Zeeland, and Vernon Pfeiffer of Aberdeen. Edwin Rieger and
Walter Balliet served as ushers.
Interment was in the Zeeland Cemetery in Zeeland with
Larson's Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
