EUREKA — Alice I. Grenz, 85, died Sunday, June 2, 2019 at the Avera Eureka Healthcare Center.

Her funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Friday, June 7, 2019 at Eureka United Methodist Church with Pastor Randall Cloud leading the service. Interment follows at the Eureka Cemetery. Musicians will be JoAnn Durmeier and Alice’s granddaughter, Erin Zaske. Granddaughter Amanda Grohs will read a poem and ushers will be Kenny Kunz and Dale Gill.
Visitation will be from 5:00-9:00 PM Thursday with family present from 5:00-7:00 PM at Lien-Straub Funeral Chapel, Eureka.

Alice Irene Steinbach was born June 17, 1933, to John and Elizabeth (Pfeifle) Steinbach, on a farm near Artas. She attended country school in Campbell County.

On June 27, 1954, she married Wilmer E. Grenz in Artas. They farmed ten miles southeast of Mound City until Wilmer’s passing on April 29, 1980. She moved to Eureka and worked as a cook at the Eureka Nursing Home.

On August 27, 1997 she married Kenneth Waege in South Shore. They made their home in Watertown where Alice worked at the Jenkins Nursing Home until her retirement in 2013. Since April 2018, Alice lived at the Eureka Healthcare Center.

Alice was a member of the United Methodist Church in Eureka. She enjoyed cooking and baking for family and friends, quilting, gardening and getting together with the family for the holidays. She was well known for the quilts she would hand sew for family and friends.

Alice is survived by her husband, Kenneth, of Watertown; two sons-John (Lucy Atwood) of Rapid City and David (Judy) Grenz of Mound City; two daughters-Sherri (Richard) Kraft of Aberdeen and Holly (Darrel) Grohs of Watertown; one brother, Ted (Judy) Steinbach, of Herreid; four stepsons-Bryan, Lynn, Larry, and Wade Waege; 14 grandchildren---- — Eric (Amber) Grenz, Erin Zaske, Ryan (Ashley) Grenz, Scott (Crystal) Bachmeier, Corey (Samantha) Bachmeier, Matthew (Kristen) Grohs, Amanda Grohs, Zachary Grohs; Brooke, Sierra, Walker, Spencer, Hunter and Tanner Waege; 15 great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Steinbach, of Spearfish.


In addition to Wilmer, Alice was preceded in death by her father John, on November 7, 1985; her mother, Elizabeth, on April 12, 1979; three sons (an infant, Timothy and Michael); daughter-in-law (Theresa Grenz); brother (Rueben Steinbach); and three sisters (Hertha, Elizabeth, and Viola Steinbach).

Honorary bearers will be the Avera Eureka Healthcare Center Staff.
Casketbearers will be grandsons-Eric Grenz, Ryan Grenz, Scott Bachmeier, Corey Bachmeier, Matthew Grohs, and Zachary Grohs.
