Obituary for Benjamin Grenz

 Benjamin Grenz, 82, Selby, SD, died Monday, July 16, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society, Selby. Services will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, July 21, 2018 at St. John Lutheran Church, Selby, with Pastor David Warner officiating. Interment will be 2:30 PM Saturday at Kessel Cemetery near Zeeland, ND. Accordionist will be Sandy Warner and the congregation will sing “How great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace, how Sweet the Sound”. Ardella Ackerman will sing “Gott Ist Die Liebe and Pastor David and Sandy Warner will wing “What a Day That Will Be”.

There will be a prayer service at Lien Funeral Chapel, Selby, 7:00 PM Friday. Visitation begins 5:00 PM.

Benjamin Grenz, son of Justina (Haas) and Joseph Grenz, was born February 12, 1936 at Trail City, SD. When Benjamin was eight, the family relocated to a farm eight miles east of Mound City, SD. After his schooling, Benjamin worked at the farm of his uncle, Henry Grenz, and then returned to his dad’s farm. Ben married Priscilla Wiest on May 27, 1956 at Wishek, ND. They first settled on the Grenz farm. In 1963, they relocated to Selby. Ben helped numerous farmers until he took a job at the Walworth County Courthouse. He was employed there as a janitor and boiler engineer for 17 years. Upon retirement, Ben worked repairing small engines out of his garage. Since May 2017, he has resided at the Selby Good Samaritan Society. He was a member of New Freedom Baptist Church in Mobridge. When he was able, Ben did some fishing.

Ben is survived by Priscilla, his wife of 62 years; one son—Larry (Brenda) Grenz of Philip, SD; three daughters—Johanna (Russell) Baye of Philip, Joyce Kightlinger of Sioux Falls, SD, and Vicki (Chuck) Schilling of Mound City; one brother-Milbert (Joyce Johnson) Grenz of Gillette, WY; one sister- Wilma Greger of Selby; nine grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren---Brody, Benjamin, Kaylee, Rhea, Lela, Willow, and Kenneth.

He was preceded in death by his father on November 17, 1971, his mother on March 1, 1969, and six sisters—three infants and Irene Goehring, Frieda Aman and Lorraine Ellis.
