Gottlieb met Barbara Steiger, daughter of Valentine (John ) and Katherine Steiger of Gackle, North Dakota. Barbara was born September 28, 1889, in New Freundental, Russia. The Steigers immigrated to the United States on November 9, 1898. They arrived from Bremen, Germany, on the ship named Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse. They settled in the Gackle area.

Gottlieb and Barbara were married at the home of her parents in Gackle on January 12, 1910. They settled on a homestead about ten miles west of Hazelton. Gottlieb was 25 years old and Barbara was 21. They were blessed with nine children. Martha married Adolph Miller, Henry married Agnes Sikle, Reinhold married Mary Jane Dix, Ida married August Miller, Ruth married Reuben Eisenbarth, Christine married Wilbur Purdy, Esther married Robert Cole, Richard married Phyllis Brown, and Edwin died at or shortly after birth.

Gottlieb and Barbara lived west of Hazelton until 1940 and then lived at Braddock from 1940 to 1946. That year they moved to Missoula, Montana. Barbara passed away in Missoula on June 8, 1954. Gottlieb sold their home in Missoula in 1958 and moved around a bit between the sons and daughters. When he passed away on June 21, 1962, he was back living in Hazelton.
